Who's Involved: Edge, Matt Hardy and Lita What Happened: Hardy's woes only continued after he lost his real-life girlfriend Lita to Kane in story. After that feud ended, Hardy would take nearly a whole year off recuperating from injuries while the other half of his six year relationship stayed on the road. Having been through WrestleMania show-stealing ladder matches together and revolutionising the tag team division, Hardy was great friends with Adam Copeland (Edge) behind the scenes, he was also still on the road. One thing led to another and poor Matt was stuck at home while his best friend was sleeping with his girlfriend all around the world. After finding out about this, Matt understandably let his frustrations be known as he spread word all over the internet of his friends betrayal, famously saying at one point, "it's kill or be killed, Adam, and Matt Hardy will not die!". In a shock twist to the real life mess, WWE decided to release Hardy from his contract as they viewed Edge as a more important part of the roster especially considering he was on the verge of his first big push. However, fans revolted against Edge and Lita and lobbied hard for Matt to be brought back. WWE eventually folded under pressure, giving Hardy his job back. Never one to shy away from exposing people's real life drama to earn a dollar, Vince threw Hardy straight into a feud with Edge as a jaded ex lover hell bent on revenge. They would clash in an epic Steel Cage match at Unforgiven, leaving plenty of iconic moments in their wake including a Hardy leg drop off the top of the cage. It's incredible and a real credit to both parties that they were able to work a story at all considering the pure grief Matt must have been going through at the time. Their professional attitude shone through the difficult situation and they were able to work together despite their differences. Who Lost Out: Despite having the love of every wrestling fan in the world, there's no way Matt Hardy could have come out of this situation positively. His long term girlfriend slept with his best friend and he was then fired for being the victim and to rub salt in the wound, Edge would ride the wave of epic heat to the top of the card as the companies biggest heel and WWE champion with Lita by his side.
