15 Great Heel Versus Heel Matches You Must See

3. Vader vs. Steve Austin (1997)

It is admittedly odd to hear the glass shatter without accompanying raucous cheers, but fans were still a few months away from not caring that the Austin character was objectively terrible person. Austin was on a serious career upswing, only a few months away from his WrestleMania 13 face turn and becoming the biggest thing ever. Vader had just returned from injury and was looking to make an impression on WWE, and also Austin's face. Vader and Austin were both known for their brawling, and that's what they did here. It's rare to see Austin get dominated when hands start flying, but Vader had the power to do it. Luckily, this was before Austin's chronic knee problems, and he was able to use his speed advantage to just fly at the big man. At one point he came off the ropes like a cannonball, hitting the nastiest Lou Thesz press of his career. Austin was able to stick and move, stomping mud holes and unloading rapid-fire punches whenever he could, but Vader continually stopped his momentum. When the monster attempted to finish things with a slingshot splash, Austin countered with a thunderous uppercut to the groin. Bret Hart, who had been complaining about Austin on commentary for the entire match, chose that moment to run to ringside, clipping the Rattlesnake's knee and causing the Mastodon a DQ loss.
