There was no storyline WWE could have provided that would have matched the collective head canon of millions of fans worldwide salivating at the prospect of a match they assumed was never destined to occur.

The feud between Daniel Bryan and The Miz was one the company always leaned on - from Bryan's NXT debut all the way through to a lingering beef long after his retirement. Opposing forces as characters and men, they had perfect pro wrestling chemistry and have evolved on both fronts to bring the programme to its apex at exactly the right time in their respective careers.

Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart never had the match they should have during their prime, but these two are the deftest at making the work feel like a shoot - and practiced at the contest itself from months of working together on house show loops. Bryan's contract status has yet to be resolved, but that won't be the reason he loses here. WWE have managed to save this for SummerSlam, but nothing's ever one and done anymore. If the 'YES! Man' does stick around for one more run, a chance at redemption for this defeat should be his first order of business.
