4. The Freebird Rule
The so called 'Freebird Rule' is a ruling that allows multiple people to hold the same championship at the same time, as long as everyone is a willing participant. It came into effect after The Fabulous Freebirds, a group consisting of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts, won the tag team championship. It was decided as part of their gimmick that they could share the titles between them, they would all be recognised as champions, and any combination of the three men could defend the titles. Since then, there have been other stables and groups to have followed in the Freebirds footsteps and have taken advantage of the ruling. Groups like Demolition & The Spirit Squad have all held the tag team titles, even with up to 5 members in their groups. The Freebird rule has also been applied to singles' titles, allowing two individual wrestlers to share one belt, the most recent being Michelle McCool & Layla who literally shared the Women's Championship belt on two separate occasions. They say you can only rely on yourself to win a title, but if you have a good enough friend, then there's the chance they'd be happy to share it with you.
