Stardust silliness wasn't the first strike against WWE's creative forces from one Cody Rhodes. In 2013, his fun Team Rhodes Scholars tag team with Damien Sandow went to the dogs, albeit initially for a constructive reason: Vince McMahon had handpicked Sandow to win the Money In The Bank briefcase on the pay-per-view of the same name that year. Better yet, he wanted Cody to play a part in the story.

Rhodes was booked to be jealous of Sandow's success. He wanted the case for himself, so Team Rhodes Scholars turned into 'Team Yesterday's News' and officially split on the 15 July 2013 Raw when Cody attacked Damien out of spite and jealousy. So far so good, right? It wasn't long before the half-baked parts of WWE's storyboarding screeched into view.

Sandow went on a baffling losing streak before failing to cash in properly on John Cena during the 28 October Raw. So much for that major singles push, and so much for Rhodes benefitting from warring with somebody who had been headed to the top. The fact that both members of the team seemed like less of a big deal following their split and Sandow’s cash-in flub is something that WWE should've been ashamed of at the time.

There was no need to have Cody turn on Damien. Seriously. Both intelligent jocks could've squeezed a lot more out of their union had Rhodes been supportive. By the time Sandow had failed to cash in, there was nothing left for the pair to do as friends or rivals. What a mess.

Boo.
