19 Nastiest WWE Breakups
5. Randy Savage
On the surface, Randy Savage's departure from WWE seems entirely understandable for the time. Vince McMahon was trying to change the company's image and push new talent in the wake of Hulk Hogan's departure and the steroid scandal. Randy Savage, who could still go in the ring, had been relegated to the commentary booth due to McMahon's belief that he was "too old." Frustrated with this lack of faith, Savage elected to sign with WCW in late 1994.
It seemed like an amicable split, even if it hurt WWE to have the two biggest stars of the last era now in direct competition. However, even after the fall of WCW, Vince McMahon apparently made no attempt to bring back the Macho Man. Reportedly even, when the suggestion came up from others, McMahon immediately shot it down and instructed those to never bring it up again.
What happened between Vince McMahon and Randy Savage? Unfortunately, this is a story full of Bruce Prichard's favorite things: rumor and innuendo. The most sensational story to explain this has become wrestling lore. Apparently, Savage had an affair with a (then underage) Stephanie McMahon before he left the company, and Vince only found out after Randy was gone.
This story has never been confirmed by anyone who might have known. Regardless, however, something personal must have had to have happened to make Vince McMahon never want to work with Randy Savage ever again.
