2 Ups & 5 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (May 16)

1. Orton Vs. Corbin: No Urgency, No Excitement

SmackDown usually gives viewers at least one or two good-to-great matches on a weekly basis, but not last night. Unfortunately, each of this week's bouts were disappointing in their own way, with the main event between Randy Orton and Baron Corbin closing the night on a major low.

The work was fine, but "fine" isn't acceptable in this spot. The blue brand have become known for their top notch main events, but Orton and Corbin performed as if they were wrestling the opening match. Neither man looked like they were putting much effort into the bout, and the result was another vanilla singles contest completely lacking in urgency, giving the impression that both were doing the bare minimum to get by.

Orton scored the victory, which is the right result, as having the WWE Champion get pinned in a non-title match ahead of the pay-per-view would only heap further drudgery on the Jinder Mahal bout. Speaking of 'The Maharaja,' he and the Singh Brothers didn't get involved during the match, but they appeared afterwards.

Jinder cut one of his middle of the road promos before the Singhs jumped Orton from behind, and the trio beat the champ down. The show finished on Mahal posing with the WWE Title: a dismal image, but one that felt appropriate for such a lacklustre show.
