2 Ups And 4 Downs From WWE Mae Young Classic (Sept 12)

3. David Versus Goliath, Take 2

Last week, Lacey Lane overcame a much larger Vanessa Kraven to advance in the tournament. It was a match Michael Cole dubbed “David versus Goliath,” a somewhat overused analogy in wrestling.

Wednesday night, we got our second David versus Goliath match of the tournament in as many episodes, as Kacy Catanzaro defeated Reina Gonzalez. The contrast between the two couldn’t have been more stark: Kacy stands 5 feet tall and weighs about 100 pounds, while Gonzalez is a full foot taller and is double her weight.

There’s only so many times you can tell this story, and in this situation, it didn’t work as well as last week. Lane had a pretty good offensive repertoire, while Catanzaro was limited in the ring. It’s understandable that WWE wanted her to get an upset win in the first round, but a rollup where Kacy held Reins down for a three count just didn’t work.

And for Gonzalez, that’s two Mae Young Classic first round exits in a row. That’s not a good track record.
