A forgotten classic in the pantheon of great WWE tag spotfests, this four-team WWE Tag Title bout is unfortunately best remembered for a horrendous ladder spot that broke Joey Mercury’s face. A shame, because as a spectacle, this Armageddon 2006 bout sits comfortably alongside the best tag matches WWE have ever produced.

The match had plenty of high spots, but bags of hidden depth to it as well. Kendrick & London, the Hardys, and MNM were revered for their athletic skills and high-flying movesets, but Regal & Taylor? Not so much. Their addition gave the contest a different gear, and the psychology of them trying to keep the match grounded by avoiding the ladders, then accepting their fate and nervously attempting to climb them helped set the match apart.

It lacks the historical importance of some of the classic Attitude Era tag bouts, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Kendrick & London eventually retained their belts, but they paid a heavy price for it, with both men tumbling from the ladders on a couple of occasions. Mercury’s grisly injury serves as a stark reminder of the risk involved in bouts like this, however, which is probably the most important takeaway.
