20 Incredible John Cena Matches To Binge-Watch Before He Retires
12. John Cena vs Edge - Unforgiven 2006
So much of John Cena's legacy is wrapped up in the stars that he helped make along the way. A win over Cena felt like defeating "the final boss" before The Rock ever coined the term, and Edge was the beneficiary of this more than any other. Coming from a largely comedic tag team, Edge had already begun his metamorphosis into 'The Rated R Superstar', but he needed someone to embed him as a main event player, and who better to achieve that than Big Match John?
2006 established Edge vs Cena as an all-time great rivalry. It was a year in which Edge became the first Money In The Bank winner to cash in on the champion, as he stole the title from Cena. The Canadian then continued to torment the 'Face That Runs The Place' in infuriating fashion. After losing the title back to Cena a few weeks later, Edge would then cost John that championship at ECW One Night Stand, before the pair created their magnum opus in Edge's hometown of Toronto in his signature TLC match.
John Cena entered the match as the challenger for Edge's WWE Title, and did so in an uncharacteristically stern fashion. Edge increased the intensity early into the contest, slapping Cena and calling him a "b**ch" clear on camera, before all hell broke loose. Cena would emerge the victor, but this spot-fest earns its place on this list as arguably the most brutal TLC encounter to ever take place in a WWE ring.
