The rise of the WWF after Vince took over was staggering. Key to that success was his use of closed circuit television and pay per view to sell events like WrestleMania around the globe. Another pay per view event that became staple of the WWF was the Royal Rumble. Nowadays it stands as the second biggest special show on the WWE calendar. But when Pat Patterson first introduced the concept in 1987, Vince immediately shot it down as a bad idea. It wasn't until an attraction was needed for a USA network special that the idea was brought up again, largely thanks to NBC executive Dick Ebersol. "Tell Ebersol your stupid idea," Patterson claimed Vince said. Ebersol loved it and told McMahon that the fans would go crazy for it.
