Following a surprisingly great bout between Lex Luger and Brian Pillman for the US Title, Flair and Funk needed to pull out all the stops to close the show on a high at Clash of the Champions IX. With the “I Quit” stipulation hanging over them, they did all that and more.

The action spilled out of the ring within minutes and Funk immediately played up to his role of the crazed madman to perfection, swinging erratically at ringside fans while on the outside. With action both inside the ring and out, the match was a wild brawl for its entirety and neither man was afraid to take full advantage of the lax rules.

At a time when the term “hardcore wrestling” didn’t even exist, on this night, Funk and Flair took things to the extreme. The bout was revolutionary, innovative and truly ahead of its time. The “Hardcore Legend” himself, Mick Foley, has even gone on record as saying the match is one of his favourite bouts ever; which says a lot for it’s influence on the industry.
