The iconic masks that luchadors adorn for battle has forever been a vital component of Lucha Libre and has become a legendary part of Mexican wrestling culture.

The respect these men have for their masks is an accepted part of life in Mexico; which made Mysterio’s decision to put his mask on the line at Halloween Havoc ‘97 all the more significant.

But the stipulation wasn’t without its upside, as “The Master of the 619” had agreed to offer up his mask in exchange for a shot at Guerrero’s Cruiserweight Championship; an offer which Guerrero, the hated heel, would be more than happy to oblige.

The match that took place is one of the most exciting and impressive matches in wrestling history. From drama to high spots, it quite literally has everything a fan could want from a wrestling match; including a Moonsault/DDT combo by Rey that, to this day, is still one of the most incredible moves ever caught on film.

Every time Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio Jr. stepped into the ring together throughout their careers, they managed to capture lightning in a bottle and create magic. For two men with such incredible skill, to say this match is their greatest work is high praise indeed; to some, it’s not high enough.

This match is simply a masterpiece.
