20 WWE WrestleMania Matches We Almost Got (And Why We Didn't)
1. The Undertaker vs. Sting - WrestleMania XXVII
This was the dream match to end all dream matches, the Icon vs the Phenom, two undisputed legends of their respective companies and who had never crossed paths under their most famous guises.
Going into 2011, Sting's contract with TNA was due to expire and WWE was fighting hard to sign the last WCW loyalist. In the early months, the company began airing promos of a crooked shack, sinister background and the traditional spook'ems that you might expect, alongside the date 2/21/11 which was indeed going to signal Sting's arrival into the company.
The plan was for him to arrive on that date, end up confronting the Undertaker and set up a match between the two at WrestleMania XXVII.
Why didn't it happen?
Sting was offered the world by WWE to get him to sign a contract, not only a money-match with the Deadman, but also a Hall of Fame induction at that year's ceremony in Atlanta. Sting was apparently very close to signing on the dotted line but ultimately refused, citing his previous concerns about not trusting the company to treat his career with respect, in the same way they didn't with Booker T in 2001.
Sting eventually signed in 2014, fought in a losing effort to Triple H, and ended his WWE career following a catastrophic back injury at 2015's Night of Champions, putting rumblings of a WrestleMania 32 match between him and Undertaker firmly 6-feet under.
