Mr. Kennedy was once hand-picked for WWE Championship glory by Vince McMahon himself. Unfortunately, things never quite worked out for him. Kennedy was a gifted microphone worker who was immensely over with the crowd at one point, but he was never the most exciting in-ring performer, and suffered consistent and debilitating injury problems towards the end of his WWE career.

Things really came to a head in 2010, a year after Kennedy’s WWE release. During an interview, Kennedy claimed that his release came shortly after Randy Orton had complained to management that Kennedy had worked recklessly in a recent match between the two. Referring to an iffy backdrop that saw Orton land awkwardly on his head and neck, The Viper argued that Kennedy could’ve ended his career, and that the complaint was enough to convince Mr. McMahon to fire Kennedy outright.

Orton himself has been embroiled in a number of backstage controversies over the years, so it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to suggest that he politicked to have Kennedy removed from his job. While Orton would establish himself as one of the biggest stars of his generation, Kennedy didn’t truly find his feet in the business until signing with TNA not long after his WWE dismissal.

He has continued to throw shade at Orton whenever given the chance, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see him back in WWE.
