After losing the undisputed title at WrestleMania X-8 to a returning Triple H, Jericho set his sights on one of Hunter's best friends: Shawn Michaels.

Jericho had idolized Michaels for years but now wanted to prove that he was better than the man he admired for so long. At the 2003 Royal Rumble, Jericho was allowed to pick his entry number and purposefully chose #2 so he could face Shawn, who was #1.

Jericho eliminated Michaels thanks to Christian's interference but Michaels illegally returned later in the match to help get rid of Jericho. The two men were scheduled to settle their dispute at WrestleMania 19 in Seattle, promising to steal the show with their match.

At the event, Michaels and Jericho put on an amazing match that had solid ring work, good psychology, and great crowd heat. Michaels managed to sneak away with a victory that night but what happened after the match was almost as important as the match itself.

Following the great bout, Michaels stood in the center of the ring and offered to shake hands with his rival, the crowd cheered as Jericho embraced HBK and seemed to turn back to his babyface roots. Unfortunately for the crowd, Jericho then proceeded to punt Shawn in his crotch and then shoved him to the ground, still remaining the mega-heel they loved to hate.
