SummerSlam was as uneven as WWE gets on the ‘Premium Live Event’ stage.

CM Punk Vs. Gunther was either a slow-burn epic or incredibly boring. John Cena somehow exhumed Super Cena in a very well-received if excessive epic against Cody Rhodes. Elsewhere, for what is meant to be the second or third biggest show of the year, SummerSlam was plagued by bad or nothing matches. Solo Sikoa and Karrion Kross made it feel like TNA could become the #1 promotion, never mind #2.

It is best remembered for (and was completely overshadowed by) the galling return of Brock Lesnar - but if you want to look past the unrelentingly grim machinations that churn our world further into oblivion, there was a really funny moment involving one of the most hyper-earnest pro wrestlers ever born: Johnny Gargano. Johnny Gargano!

In the second incredible multi-man ladder match involving the SmackDown tag team division in 2025, everything broke down - thrillingly. In a great sequence, a member of each team got blasted through a table in a rapid-fire blitz, one after the other about a second apart. It was awesome - and the range of the match widened to incorporate some tremendous black comedy. #DIY sought to capitalise on the mayhem when Gargano’s wife Candice LeRae entered the ring. It didn’t work out; she took one for the team by getting blasted through a suspended ladder bridge in a demented spot. It looked like it must have absolutely sucked to take, and the shock value elevated the viscerally guilty thrill.

Then Gargano, far more interested in winning the match than in the well-being of his missus, did a thumbs-up “Are you good?” gesture before swiftly, hilariously moving on.

A wonderfully callous only-in-wrestling moment.
