18. The Young Bucks Get A Jobber Entrance

Jobber Entrance Young Bucks

The Young Bucks lost their EVP status at All In: Texas by losing to Will Ospreay and Swerve Strickland. In wrestling logic, this meant they went flat broke. They were also pranked on a weekly basis by the AEW employees they had tormented.

Truthfully, this might have all worked better, had AEW actually committed to the angle throughout 2024, and not booked the Bucks to bicker with Christopher Daniels every now and then. The Bucks had not harassed nor threatened any production staffers in well over a year.

Still, when it was funny, it was funny, and it was reassuring to watch the Bucks as they felt dialled-in. When they care - and are not for example visibly going through the motions after Brawl Out - they are a relentless ideas factory.

Justin Roberts got in on the bit, by introducing the Bucks with a stupendous “these guys are losing in two minutes on Dark, who cares” deadpan. The Bucks were introduced on the July 30 Dynamite in the middle of the ring. They were given the dreaded “jobber entrance” in a funny moment that made rare, effective narrative use of storytelling reliant on insider knowledge. The Bucks were apoplectic at this display of disrespect, but the humiliation was made all the funnier by the use of dramatic irony. The Bucks were not aware of what was stated on their lower third chyron. The tech guys didn’t even bother to update it, leaving the Stat/Talent Name/Social Media template blank.

This was a great detail - the sort of loving touch underscoring that, at its best, AEW is a dorky passion project masquerading as an ultra-corporate TV property.
