Bianca Belair vs Sasha Banks brought the house down in the main event of night one of WrestleMania 37. Athletic, emotional, and culturally significant, Belair's victory was rightly heralded as a landmark moment for WWE. Taking this into account, the pair being booked to do battle again at SummerSlam was an understandable decision. Only that plan was ripped up for a moment involving a returning Becky Lynch that baffled and angered fans everywhere.

On the road to SummerSlam, it was announced that Banks hadn't been cleared to compete to challenge for the title and would be replaced by Carmella. With the bell about to ring to start the match, Becky Lynch's music hit, and the crowd at Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium went wild. Lynch had been missing since relinquishing her title in May 2020, when she announced her pregnancy and gave up her world title, and this return obviously felt huge.

Becky decimated Carmella and challenged Belair for the women's championship, with Bianca accepting this impromptu challenge. Lynch then hit the Manhandle Slam on Belair, defeating her in less than 30 seconds. This was sold as being part of a Becky heel turn, but this whole debacle was a mess. From Banks' inability to compete being unexplained, to Carmella being thrown under the bus, to Belair being made to look like a chump, this was hideous booking from Vince McMahon on every level.
