25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2023
12. Jey and Roman Is Done To Death
Once Roman Reigns' hand was raised in victory at the end of WrestleMania 39, it was generally accepted that The Bloodline saga was going to continue for another year (at least). There were many differing viewpoints on the merits of this, but WWE couldn't be blamed too much for persisting with their most successful storyline and faction in aeons.
It was just a question of how they were going to make things interesting without boring the audience with stories they'd already seen.
That plan hit a roadblock with reignited friction between Jey Uso and Roman. Tensions had already reached boiling point between the cousins several times, and that's why a lot of the interactions and confrontations between the pair in the summer of 2023 felt so repetitive. Jey pinning the 'Tribal Chief' in The Usos vs. Roman and Solo Sikoa 'Bloodline Civil War' match at Money In The Bank in London felt enormous, but by the time their one-on-one 'Tribal Combat' match happened at SummerSlam, audiences were justifiably burned out.
Part of the issue was that Jey still felt like a tag team wrestler, and the idea of him dethroning Roman and ending his historic run was implausible. Mainly though, it was that the audience was sick of the same storyline being played out. WWE had a year to fill with Roman as champion before Cody finished his story, and way too much of that was spent retreading old ground with Bloodline in-fighting focused around Jey.
