25 'WWE Superstars' Matches That Were Actually Awesome
4. Edge vs. CM Punk (July 2, 2009)
Almost exactly one year removed from their impromptu World Heavyweight Championship match on Raw, CM Punk and Edge crossed paths once again on the July 2, 2009 edition of 'WWE Superstars'. It was a rare clash of the champions as Punk was the reigning World Heavyweight champion at the time and Edge was one-half one of the WWE Tag Team champions with Chris Jericho. Both emerged victorious in their respective matches at The Bash pay-per-view days earlier, but only one winner would be named in this match. Even though, Punk was in the midst of a heel turn, the crowd was still solidly behind him as he took on the despised Edge. They've always worked well together and this match was no different. Each was trying to prove they were the true head honcho of SmackDown and a victory in this match would certainly have helped their case. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH3WWxv--oM However, the match ended with Edge winning by way of forfeit after Punk cited his nagging "eye injury" as his reasoning for being unable to continue. Storyline progression was never an integral part of 'Superstars' but it was welcomed in this match.
