3 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Feb 13)
1. Abandon All Logic
Though they started SmackDown with aplomb, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were booked like utter losers last night, dropping clean pinfalls to Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin respectively.
We'll get to the matches and the show-opening assault soon, but let's talk about the booking for a moment. While WWE Title challengers losing during a pay-per-view build isn't ideal, we can buy into it under the right circumstances, particularly if they're protected. Unfortunately, what happened to Zayn and Owens was the opposite of this.
They beat Corbin and Ziggler down at the start of the show, and while both had some time to recover before wrestling later on, the idea that they'd be in good enough condition to topple two guys who are supposed to be SD's top heels is nuts. Zayn and Owens fell to a couple of half-strength midcarders. This makes them look incompetent, and while WWE constantly tell us that "wins and losses don't matter," they do, and Sami and Kevin's credibility is now in the toilet.
As noted last week, all we ask is that professional wrestling makes sense. Not only were Ziggler and Corbin thrown into the main event scene in the most senseless way imaginable last night, but Road Dogg & co. saw fit to emasculate Zayn and Owens in the process, because that's what this show does now.
