16. Roddy Piper Blames Vince Russo For Owen Hart's Death

Classic Vince Russo insanity unfolded when Roddy Piper stormed into the early days of TNA, delivering a worked shoot promo that spiralled completely off the rails. The company's original weekly pay-per-view format oddly fit Russo’s chaotic, scattergun approach - the same style he claimed credit for during WWE’s Attitude Era. Though both he and the company denied any official creative relationship beyond his on-screen role at the time, the nonstop barrage of nonsensical booking suggested otherwise. Hundreds of ideas were thrown at the wall, hoping at least something would stick.

Amidst the usual mix of women, weapons, and the occasional wrestling match, TNA often trotted out old legends, handing them live microphones to work through their post-WCW trauma. But Piper’s segment was on another level.

Fresh off a disastrous WWE run, he first used his appearance to shamelessly plug his website and book before turning his fury toward Russo. At first, it played like a standard burial of Russo’s on-screen character, but it quickly became bitingly, awkwardly personal. Piper viciously tore into the controversial writer, sneering that TNA was “the last place Russo hasn’t killed.”

Then, things got dark. Suggesting Russo deliberately sabotaged young wrestlers’ careers, Piper suddenly dropped a shocking line: “Did you write in my cousin Owen’s death?” The audience fell silent, as the segment veered into infamy. Predictably, it led nowhere. No match, no real feud - just another week where TNA looked like a chaotic wasteland, before moving on in search of the next ranting icon.
