4 Ups & 4 Downs Before WWE SummerSlam 2017
1. There's No WWE Title MITB Drama
On that note, one of SummerSlam's main hooks was ruined on SmackDown. WWE clearly haven't enjoyed Baron Corbin's work since becoming Mr. Money In The Bank, because he was written to look foolish and lose the briefcase before this Sunday's pay-per-view. Corbin's misfortune doesn't make much sense.
It would've been better to sit on the MITB idea for a while longer. Corbin had an entire year after winning the case to cash it in, yet he was booked to lose it within 2 months? Whether higher-ups felt he was tanking in the role or not, that's very unfair. Now, Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura lacks the added drama of a cash in possibility.
Worse, what purpose does Corbin's match with John Cena serve now? It's just another match, one without the storyline context of Corbin's WWE Title destiny to help sell it as meaningful. As a heel, he's been neutered, and we wouldn't put it past creative to destroy him further by penning a loss to Cena.
