2. Punk ‘Little Bro’s’ Jey

One week is by no means enough time to establish a proper feud for a world title. Putting that truism aside, CM Punk and Jey Uso did their level best with their show-opening promo to lay the groundwork for Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Jey immediately established that he is the challenger in turmoil, an emotional roller coaster of a human with different people in his ear, doubters at every turn, and anger boiling up inside of him.

Punk decided to go for the hair-ruffling, “atta boy” backslapping to Jey, giving Uso the “little bro” treatment as he talked about being proud of Jey for standing up for and thinking for himself. He called out Jey throwing his brother out of the battle royal last week – legal, but also a sore sticking point – and let that get its measure of boos before reminding fans that it was evidence that Jey will do what it takes to win back the World Heavyweight Championship.

And Jey Uso’s retort to all of that? “Screw you, Punk.”

The grizzled vet Punk clearly was getting under Jey’s skin by gently leaning into the emotional turmoil Uso is carrying, hoping that Jey will make a mistake on Saturday. Had there been more time, this might have been an interesting story to play out over two or three weeks. Instead, it’s go time.
