Although it was set up at the last minute, the North American Championship match between Carmelo Hayes and Ricochet had the potential to be a show-stealer, and both men gave it a serious effort.

Ricochet has built a reputation as a human highlight reel, and despite an disappointing main roster run, he’s rejuvenated himself a bit recently. His match with Hayes was designed to elevate Carmelo’s game and make him come up to his level – or at least look like it.

In the early stages, the two were at a stalemate with various holds, kicks and pinfall attempts. But this carried throughout the match, with each man countering the other’s signature spots and anticipating what they’d do next. This conveyed really well the similarities between the superstars and showed that the North American Champion was up to the task.

All things being equal, it came down to Trick Williams being the difference-maker, as his distracted proved to be just enough to give Carmelo time to dodge a Shooting Star Press and grab a cradle to retain the title.

Really nice opener, though it didn’t quite rise to the level of a memorable classic. Still, a good start to the show.
