5 Biggest Winners & Losers From WWE SmackDown Live (Oct 18)
1. Loser: AJ Styles
AJ Styles isn’t having a great time at the moment. Though tainted by Dean Ambrose’s crooked refereeing performance, last week saw him take a pinfall loss to this generation’s Mikey Whipwreck Lite, James Ellsworth. This outcome meant Styles facing off with Ellsworth with the WWE World Championship on the line last night, and while Styles retained his title, he did so via DQ.
In a match that went on for entirely too long, AJ beat the tar out of Ellsworth. The challenger had his moments, however, and scored a near-fall with a Superkick late in the match. Ambrose’s ringside presence drove Styles to take his beatdown to the next level, however, and he was disqualified for use of excessive force.
That’s not the end of the story, though. Ambrose goaded AJ for what was technically a loss, and by the time SmackDown went off the air, Ambrose had drilled the champion with a Dirty Deeds. For the second week in a row, the WWE Champion had been made to look a complete fool.
Styles has always had the upperhand over Dean when it comes to in-ring competition, but he’s fallen drastically behind The Lunatic Fringe throughout their singles feud. At this point, AJ’s momentum is close to nonexistent, and that’s not a good spot for him, especially considering a match with Ambrose has already been made for next week.
