5 Storytelling Crutches WWE Needs To Ditch Right Now
1. Automatic Title Rematches
This is supreme laziness. Before the days when a title contender was basically guaranteed to have a trilogy of matches for the title -- Jinder Mahal Vs. Randy Orton is only the most recent example of this -- title shots had to be earned, and they were usually one and done.
When was the last time there was a solid, honest to God chase for the title? Either a wrestler loses their title match, and then has to work their way back into title contention, or a champion loses the belt, and then has to prove themselves worthy of a rematch. Or they're screwed out of a rematch by a crafty heel or a vicious manager.
That's a great story, and simple to execute.
The automatic rematch guarantees you'll have a reason for a match at the next pay-per-view, or the next night on Raw, but it's so ingrained at this point that it would be surprising if it didn't happen.
Heck, look at Samoa Joe. The idea that he got a one-and-done shot at the Universal Title against Brock Lesnar appalled people. And it led to a four-way that will most likely be a freaking excellent exciting match.
Amazing what happens when you break out of the old storytelling ruts once in a while.
