5 Supernatural Characters That Got Over In WWE (And 5 That SUCKED!)
8. Got Over: The Boogeyman
Like many other supernatural gimmicks, this shouldn't have had a single leg to stand on. The gross and completely over-the-top Boogeyman character was something straight out of a horror B-movie. And yet it was impossible not to get excited anytime this creepy performer made a sudden appearance.
Marty Wright made his debut with WWE as part of the Tough Enough competition, for which he would end up being eliminated after revealing that he was 40 years old as opposed to the 30-year minimum required. But this would lead to him joining OVW and developing The Boogeyman gimmick.
Eventually, he made his way to the main roster, and while he didn't wrestle a whole bunch, he was undoubtedly eye-catching as his face-paint, strong costume, and disgusting antics were impossible to ignore. He even made a habit of eating worms and once decided to chomp down on a growth on Jillian Hall's face.
The gimmick was gross, absurd and completely lacking in subtlety. But, the fun that Wright had with it and his lack of over-exposure meant that the character was always a pleasant surprise, and he never overstayed his welcome.
