5 Supernatural Characters That Got Over In WWE (And 5 That SUCKED!)
7. Sucked: Papa Shango
Charles Wright is certainly no stranger to bombastic gimmicks as the most considerable success he found in his career was under the moniker of The Godfather, where he played a wrestling pimp. But, he didn't knock it out of the park the first time, as that surprisingly well-received gimmick was predated by many failures, with the worst being Papa Shango.
Hailing from Parts Unknown, Papa Shago was a voodoo priest, inspired by the villainous Baron Samedi from Live and Let Die. The gimmick was almost dead on arrival, as he debuted right into the main event, being given the task of interfering in the Hogan vs Sid Justice WrestleMania VIII bout. But, he infamously missed his cue, which seemed to be an omen for the gimmick.
Fans despised the role, as his supernatural powers - which could cause wrestlers to vomit from afar - was a mockery of believability. The WWF still found itself relying on cartoonish gimmicks in the early 90s, but fans were starting to tire of it, and this character's over-the-top manner was a real sticking point for many. Plus, he was pushed hard in his debut, shining a spotlight on how much the fans rejected him.
