5 Ups & 1 Down From AEW Rampage (Jan 6)
4. Mike Bennett’s Breakout Party
This is the best Mike Bennett has looked since appearing on the AEW scene.
It's worth saying that he was in there with Darby Allin, and the new TNT Champ can work with anybody, but Bennett met the daredevil halfway during Rampage's headliner. In fact, Darbs gave Mike most of the match, which served two distinct purposes that helped both.
Firstly, it gave Bennett some much-needed menace. Second, it subtly sold the physicality of Allin's match with Samoa Joe on Wednesday's Dynamite. Darby is at his best when he's forced to fight from underneath, because he's ace at it and fans cheer him on like it's their own son out there scrapping for his life.
The pair worked a couple of neat bumps into this match too - that leg sweep off the ring apron, whilst dangerous, was well-executed. It's the kind of move you'd expect to see from Allin anyway, and it made Bennett look like a mean son of a bitch.
Job done.
