5 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE SmackDown (May 6)

3. Moving (Slightly) Up The Ladder

Drew Gulak Gunther

Gunther smashing Drew Gulak is a step up from squashing local jobbers.

The big Austrian has looked great during his earliest SmackDown appearances, and he stormed it again with his latest masterclass in how to wreck the human body. Presumably, the former NXT man isn't actually taking liberties with his opponents. Drew Gulak is just really good at selling.

That made him the perfect opponent for Gunther this week. Also, side bar: Drew can take the pain. He's had to suffer it for years in this company anyway, and nobody realistically expects him to come out on the winning end. The dude has a Barry Horowitz vibe to him, and that's not even meant in a disparaging way.

Maybe, just maybe, WWE could parlay this into some babyface support for someone who is desperately trying to fit in and remain relevant. This writer wouldn't be against turning Gunther vs. Gulak into a bigger story if the ex-Imperium leader comes out shining in the end.
