5 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE WrestleMania 38 (Night 2)
2. Johnny Knoxville, WWE's King Of Slapstick
If Johnny Knoxville didn't raise the high, high bar set by Bad Bunny at WrestleMania 37 and Logan Paul the night before, he at least maintained their celebrity standards opposite Sami Zayn.
This Jackass-inspired stunt show was a big, messy hoot. Chris Pontius interfered and freaked Zayn out with his 'Party Boy' schtick, backing Sami into a corner, before Wee Man came out from under the ring later on and ended up bodyslamming the full-timer. Zayn cruelly booting him in the face drew monster jeers while Michael Cole struggled to contain himself on commentary, endearingly breaking his glossy facade to get swept up in the sheer fun of it all.
A crutch, baking trays, trash can lids, a swinging low-blow machine, and a table lined with mousetraps were the tip of the plunder's iceberg. Sami running face-first into a comedically huge hand outside the ring provided slapstick pops, as did Knoxville's bowling ball to the family jewels. Finally, the entire Jackass crew got involved to shuffle a giant mousetrap under the ring, with Johnny using it to trap Sami for the fall.
Zayn vs. Knoxville was always going to live or die on WWE's ability to create an environment Johnny would be comfortable in. Here, they did that. This felt like a half-episode of Jackass playing out live.
