5 Ups And 6 Downs From WWE Extreme Rules 2020
4. A Stipulation That Works
The outcome was never in doubt, but the only piece of the puzzle that could have made the match between Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler interesting was the stipulation that the challenger would choose.
Ziggler weaseled his way into a WWE Championship match, then goaded McIntyre to let him pick the stip, which he held close to the vest until the start of the match. The stipulation: Extreme Rules, for Dolph only. If Drew was counted out or disqualified, he would have lost the title. The unique stipulation led to a match where McIntyre could be counted out, but Dolph couldn’t, so Drew had to scramble to get back in the ring. Ziggler could use a steel chair, but McIntyre had to avoid using a chair or suplexing Dolph through a table.
The match was actually pretty decent, as Drew shrugged off Ziggler’s onslaught at the climax – a Fameasser, Zig-Zag and Rock Bottom on a chair – to kip up and hit a Claymore for the win. Knowing that there was no way Dolph was leaving Extreme Rules with the title might have taken away any mystique – and Ziggler was a terrible world title contender – but it was at least a tolerable match.
Now, get Ziggler away from the world title scene, please.
