Alberto Del Rio's WWE career was a fairly strange one. He seemed to be pushed frequently, but at the same time was never given the ball to properly run with. As a result his workrate dropped, and whilst he was still one of the best in-ring competitors in the company there will always be a sense of 'what could have been' about Del Rio. As a result, his Night of Champions record is fairly abysmal, with three defeats all coming in championship matches.

2011 saw him drop the WWE Championship to John Cena by submission. This story was more about CM Punk, Cena and Triple H, so despite being the champion. The following year Del Rio chalked up another loss to Sheamus, in a feud that was so terribly one-sided that it did irreparable damage to Del Rio in the company. Finally, in 2013 Del Rio lost by disqualification to a returning Rob Van Dam, after refusing to let go of his Cross Armbreaker submission finisher. RVD would fight back and deliver a Van Terminator to Del Rio.
