Despite being one of the industry's true greats, the Stinger was never really known for his promos. They weren't bad by any means, but...how many Sting interviews can you remember off the top of your head? His speech on the 16 September 1996 Nitro would probably be one of them.

WCW's top babyface was sick and tired of his allegiance to the cause being questioned, and an imposter in the midst of the nWo had become too much to take. In mid-September, Sting grabbed a microphone and announced that he would be going away for a while. In effect, he wanted to become a free agent whilst making up his mind on what the future held. It was a tidy promo.

Next stop? 'Crow' Sting and the birth of a character that'd come to define his career.

People didn't know they were getting that at the time though. Sting probably didn't even properly know what was about to happen! Seeing one of WCW's best turn his back on the fans and company highlighted just how big an impact the nWo was having on everything and everyone around it.
