50 Best WCW Moments Ever
14. Lex Luger Shocks The WWF
No-one on the WWF's side thought for one second that Lex Luger could show up on the debut edition of WCW's new Monday Nitro show on 4 September 1995. Like, it wasn't even a conscious thought. They had Lex under contract, didn't they? No, no they actually didn't. His deal had quiestly lapsed, and Luger fancied doing something radical.
He backed himself by taking less money upfront from Eric Bischoff (the boss was skeptical of Lex and wanted to see him prove his value) and becoming a major part of Nitro's opening night. On commentary, Bisch asked: "What is he doing here?!". Later, Lex was confronted by Hulk Hogan and told the world that he wanted to be in WCW because it had the top workers in the business.
Shots fired.
One can only picture the horrified look on Vince McMahon's face when he heard the news. To that point, spare a thought for the terrified staff member who had to pick up a phone and clue the boss in on what had just gone down over on Nitro. That had to be an angry conversation, but Lex didn't care - he was making waves.
