50 Best WCW Moments Ever
13. Luger Beats Hollywood
He'd continue doing so over the next couple of years.
Luger's biggest WCW moment fell on the 4 August 1997 flagship. Nitro was the place to be when he hauled Hollywood Hogan up into a powerful torture rack finish and won the World Title. Wrestlers hit the ring like they were performing a dress rehearsal for Sting's win mere months later at Starrcade, and WCW's announcers punched the air with delight.
They weren't alone. Fans in the stands high-fived one another, and everyone agreed that the promotion had found a new babyface hero to bite back at the nWo. That euphoria would only last a few days. Hogan regained the strap by beating Lex at Road Wild in Sturgis, but even that can't take away from the majesty of Luger's Nitro win.
The pop when he racked Hulk was seismic. Eric Bischoff took a ton of flak for giving away victories like this on free television rather than on pay-per-view, but he always argued that more people watched the TV than PPV anyway, so it was understandable to format things his way.
