50 Best WCW Moments Ever
12. Page Climbs The Mountain
One of the biggest plus points someone could say about WCW under Eric Bischoff's watch is that it never felt pressure to rush into things related to character growth or story. Did they get everything right? No, obviously not. However, the patient approach with Sting's change into the 'Crow' character, Goldberg's winning streak and DDP's title push should be applauded by every wrestling fan on the planet.
Keep in mind, Page could've been catapulted into the title mix after beating Randy Savage at Spring Stampede 1997. Instead, WCW kept building and building him into a babyface sensation before putting the big gold belt on him a full two years later. That's 24 months of kickass planning and patience.
Someone press the standing ovation button henceforth.
DDP conquered Hollywood Hogan, Ric Flair and Sting in a four-way match to become champ. Even better, the man who had helped set him on this road towards glory was the special guest referee. Savage counted the fall, then Page raised the strap high above his head. He'd come so far from being a walking punchline as a manager and then late-to-the-party wrestler, and everyone was chuffed for him.
