50 Best WCW Moments Ever
46. Jericho’s 1,004 Holds
Nothing Jericho did in WCW on the mic can top this, right enough.
The 30 March 1998 Nitro is memorable for a hot match pitting Chris Benoit vs. Booker T and a brawl-heavy main event between Roddy Piper and Hollywood Hogan. Elsewhere, stuffed neatly into the midcard pack, one Chris Jericho cut a promo that'd go on to gain fame as one of WCW's best.
Jericho beat Marty Jannetty to retain his Cruiserweight strap, then poked fun at Dean Malenko's 'Man Of 1,000 Holds' nickname by announcing that he actually knew 1,004. That made him vastly superior to the so-called technical wizard everyone was celebrating. Malenko could suck it. No, wait - that was on the other channel.
The genius of this segment was that Jericho paused to get some cheap heat during a commercial break. By the time cameras came back to more list-reading, fans were pelting the ring with boos, and it looked like they were jeering Jericho claiming to be better than Dean. This sort of poise really should've led to bigger and better things for Chris in WCW, but they had other priorities.
