Florida: "Dirty" Dick Slater

Dick SlaterBirthplace: Tampa, Florida Whether it's Florida, California, Georgia, Missouri or anywhere else he went in the territorial days, Dick Slater saw success. He helped to play a major role in Starrcade 1983, perhaps the biggest event in wrestling history to that point, by teaming with Bob Orton Jr. to try and take Ric Flair out before the show. There was a bounty on Flair's head, placed by his Starrcade opponent, Harley Race, and it was Slater and Orton who tried to cash in. Slater and Orton would face Flair's friends, Wahoo McDaniel and Mark Youngblood, at the event, which saw as heated a crowd as any show Slater had ever performed on. He would go on to have a modicum of success and television time, all the way up to his retirement in 1996, when he was wrestling for WCW. Like California, Florida is a state that has seen numerous big stars move there at some point in their lives, or get billed from there during their careers, but has a surprisingly low amount of actual big names that were born there.
