3. Charlotte Flair

In the last year, there has been a lot of talk about the contractual status and the desires of the diamond in the crown of WWE’s women’s division. Reports late in 2021 had circulated that Charlotte Flair had fallen out of favour with many behind the scenes in WWE, in particular her in-ring colleagues. Whilst the talk of Flair’s backstage behaviour was just hearsay, fans got a worrying look into the situation on the 22 October 2021 edition of SmackDown.

Thanks to the roster draft, the two Women’s Champions of WWE would be swapping shows, which meant an exchange of belts. What followed was an awkward scene where Charlotte refused to hand Becky Lynch her title to give Becky Two-Belts a moment (as scripted) with both titles in-hand. Instead, the Queen dropped the Raw Women’s Championship to the ground.

There was talk for weeks about the two’s upcoming Champion vs. Champion match at Survivor Series and how Charlotte’s apparent ego had gotten the best of her.

Having done everything there is to do within WWE, the idea of jumping to AEW must’ve been tantalising to Flair, not least because her boyfriend Andrade seemed to be having a good time working there after leaving WWE.

Some believe that Charlotte was using this belt exchange segment to force WWE’s hand; be that releasing her so that she could go elsewhere, or pay her to play ball so that the company’s biggest competition couldn’t get their hands on her. Either way, Charlotte would’ve won.
