6 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE Saturday Night's Main Event (25 Jan - Results & Review)
2. One Last Hard Sell
At this point, all that is left to do for the Cody Rhodes/Kevin Owens feud is fast-forward to next Saturday and ring the damn bell. The work has been put in, and fans have bought this world title ladder match hook, line, and sinker.
Despite that reality, Saturday gave fans just a bit more icing on top of the cake with Owens and Rhodes verbally sparring one last time before signing the contract for their Royal Rumble ladder match and turning over their respective titles. KO called back to Bash in Berlin, recalling that he was too good a friend to attack Cody’s damaged knee, while Rhodes ran away from WWE when things got tough several years ago.
Cody refused to take the bait, which sent Owens into a spiral about taking everything from the world champion – the pyro, the spotlight, the focus as the face of the company, and the title.
That’s when Shawn Michaels entered the chat. HBK called KO jealous, sealing his fate as a target. Owens laid into Michaels a bit before signing the contract and delivering a cheapshot on Rhodes, then tried to put Shawn down with a package piledriver, but Cody saved him. Rhodes and Michaels dropped Owens to end the segment.
Putting aside Michaels landing Sweet Chin Music as being a bit unnecessary, this was just a bit more fuel on the fire for this rivalry. Kevin Owens has felt like the entire world is against him, and now he can add HBK to that list. He continued to rant against Cody Rhodes about everything, and while Rhodes didn’t respond directly, he’s dropped any semblance of decorum and calm heading into the Rumble.
Good stuff from two of the best going in WWE today. If the match even halfway lives up to the hype, this should be a tremendous title bout.
