Whenever you see a match pitting two heels against one another, it’s always interesting to see how one of them ends up becoming the designated fan favorite for the duration of the bout.

In Monday’s Queen of the Ring quarterfinal match between Iyo Sky and Shayna Baszler, it was really easy to determine the face/heel dynamic: Shayna tapped into her badass submission expert persona, while Iyo flew around the ring, using her crowd-appealing offense to win over the audience as she fought from underneath.

Sky has not been a face since debuting on the main roster nearly two years ago, and Baszler’s run in recent years has been something of a significant disappointment from where she was in NXT and her early days on the main roster.

But Monday night, they tapped into what’s worked best for them in the past and turned up the volume. Shayna attacked Iyo’s arm relentlessly, allowing fans to rally behind the former WWE Women’s Champion while showcasing Baszler’s submission skills. Sky in turn rallied with fast-paced, high-flying offense to dazzle fans. The closing sequence saw both counter each other’s finisher before Iyo closed out the match with a moonsault to advance.

Solid wrestling that made Baszler look like a force in defeat for the first time in eons, while reminding fans that Iyo might be part of a heel faction, but she’s still got a tremendous babyface wrestler bubbling under the surface.
