6 Ups & 5 Downs For WWE Raw (7 July - Results & Review)

1. All They’ve Got

WWE Raw Goldberg Gunther

A generous read of the Gunther/Goldberg encounter on Raw would give WWE credit for keeping things extremely simple, basic, and short, avoiding long promos or some drawn-out segment.

But a more cynical view of this go-home segment before a Hall-of-Famer’s retirement match would be, “Is this all they’ve got?” Goldberg is heading into his last match (unless he wins the title and decides he must defend it rather than honor the retirement stipulation), and aside from a heavily edited pre-taped interview, there hasn’t been much said about this.

Truthfully, it’s not as if Goldberg is some beloved WWE mainstay. He spent one year in the company before leaving for 12 years, returning for a handful of big paydays during the past nine years. But a Hall-of-Famer’s last match – which involves the World Heavyweight Championship – should receive more attention than Goldberg doing the tropey muscle car arrival before slapping a mic out of Gunther’s hand, punching him once, and setting up for a spear.

Oh, and Goldberg looked a bit winded after his punch and gear-up for the spear, so Saturday should be… interesting.

However, kudos to WWE for not trying to overdo it and making Goldberg look like Goldberg here. They just went too far minimalist.
