6 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Raw (Aug 31)

5. Back To Basics

During last year, one of the most consistently funny and entertaining moments on Raw was the series of vignettes showing R-Truth trying to hold onto his 24/7 Championship. The title was a joke, so its “defences” were also treated as jokes. The humor came in the strange ways the title was pursued and defended: on a jet, on the golf course, in a TV studio, even during a romantic honeymoon encounter.

Recently, however, those title matches became less innovative – gone were the creative ways that Truth stayed safe, or how he worked to recover the title. But lately, the 24/7 title has been getting a little better attention, with Akira Tozawa and his ninjas repeatedly in the picture, which has led to more humorous encounters.

Monday, Tozawa showed up for Raw, but the guard at the gate said he wasn’t on the list. When he got out to confront the guard, Akira learned that the “guard” was really a referee, and Truth quickly rolled him up for the title. Truth fled, and Tozawa threw the ref into the van and drove off after him.

Again, just a silly skit, but that was the 24/7 Championship’s bread and butter.
