6 Ups And 5 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Sept 11)
2. Airing Dirty Laundry
Remember a couple weeks back when WWE broke the fourth wall with John Cena and Roman Reigns? This column praised it, but warned that it worked best when used sparingly.
Unfortunately, WWE is the proverbial kid in a candy store, and it just OD’d on sugar. But this time, they crossed over into a realm of airing wrestlers’ dirty laundry.
Reigns and Cena have been blurring the line weekly with their promos, and Monday was no different. Aside from discussing who’s had better matches and sold more tickets, Cena brought it back to last year’s low point for Roman, telling Reigns to consider him like a drug test, something the Big Dog couldn’t pass last summer, getting suspended.
Later, Miz and Enzo Amore locked horns, with Miz berating the motor-mouth for not learning his lessons in WWE. He brought up Enzo being kicked off the tour bus and out of the locker room, two backstage stories that had been reported, but still is the kind of dirty laundry you just don’t expect and probably shouldn’t hear in a storyline.
You could argue that the Enzo transgressions were important to reveal to paint him more as a loner and loser, but it still was just two instances of bringing backstage negatives to the foreground in a continued breaking of the fourth wall.
