7 Elaborate WWE Vignettes That Led To Nothing
2. Waylon Mercy
Waylon Mercy was basically the Bray Wyatt of his day, in that he cut impenetrably eccentric promos and his entirely impractical ring attire consisted of a garish Hawaiian shirt and a pair of white pants.
He first hit our screens in 1995 in a series of vignettes, including a genuinely quite unsettling one (shown above) in which he appears to be stalking unsuspecting families quietly enjoying a picnic in the park.
Played by Dan Spivey, this Max Cady-inspired gimmick actually had a tremendous amount of potential. The promos were, if a little-over-the-top, pretty captivating, and - while he was fit and healthy - he had the ability to back it up inside the ring too.
But that was part of the problem: the 40-something-year-old Spivey was already on his last legs as a performer. It would only be a matter of months before he had to call time on his wrestling career, in turn killing off the character before its time.
