7 Major Dean Ambrose WWE Matches That Totally Disappointed
2. Dean Ambrose Vs. Dolph Ziggler (SummerSlam 2016)
There was plenty of skepticism regarding the move to make Dolph Ziggler the No. 1 Contender to the WWE World Championship at SummerSlam, and rightfully so. He hadn't been a serious threat to a major title in years, and now all of a sudden fans were supposed to take him seriously.
To his and Dean Ambrose's credit, though, they built up the bout very nicely in the weeks leading up to the event through terrific mic work and intense interactions. But once the August extravaganza arrived, it came off as a glorified midcard match. They didn't receive a video package of any kind and the entrances were nothing newsworthy. It truly felt like it belonged in the main event of SmackDown.
The match was by no means horribly wrestled, but the crowd couldn't have cared less. Ziggler was out of place in a world title match and Ambrose's attempts to portray the heel role were unsuccessful. The only thing worse than a crowd booing a bout is complete silence, which is exactly what this match was met with.
Ambrose decisively defeated Ziggler to retain his title, and that was it. Similar to the aforementioned Survivor Series match between Ambrose and Roman Reigns, this championship clash lacked the spark it needed to engage the audience. Instead, fans sat on their hands, politely clapped when the contest concluded and then forgot all about the encounter by the night's end.
