At this point it’s almost becoming Michaels and Hogan one upping each other - back to 'HBK' again, this time it’s the One Night Only event happening in Birmingham, England. On this night in 1997, he was taking on the British Bulldog, who of course received a hometown hero’s welcome, for the European Championship.

The original plans for the match was for the Bulldog to retain his title and end the night with a nice, feelgood moment. Unfortunately, Shawn’s ego and backstage scheming got in the way. He convinced Vince to reverse the original booking, suggesting that he should go over instead. Because it was 1997 and Shawn could have asked for Vince’s wife and probably gotten Linda, the boss agreed.

In an inexplicable finish, Shawn got the win and afterwards rubbed it into the crowd’s faces alongside his buddies Triple H and Chyna. The audience was absolutely livid, raining down garbage and hatred on the heels, while the Bulldog had been denied one of the biggest wins of his career. All thanks to whisperings behind the scenes.
